Guide & Tips

• Old English words in this list are alphabeticized with æ following a and þ following t. Note that ð and ƿ are not used.
• When searching for Old English words, ignore vowel length and palatization of c and g;
  in the search box, enter ae for æ and th for þ.
• Old English words in this list are generally written in their Early West Saxon (EWS) form; some variant spellings are given following a forward slash in an entry.
  Some other variants are:- -io- where EWS has -eo-, -y- for -ie- / -i- and -ȳ- for -īe- / -ī-, an- for on-, -o for -u, -nis / -nys for -nes, -e- for -æ-, -h for -g, -oþ for -aþ.
  Also -a- before -m / -n may be written as -o- and a final double consonant may be written as a single one.
• Principal parts of verbs are given where these differ from the regular weak forms. Note that prefixes are removed from these so, if a search for e.g. forslōh yields no results, try again without the prefix (i.e. search for slōh).
  Prefixes are:- ā-, be-, for-, ġe-, on-, tō-, fore-, mis-, of-, oþ-, un-, wiþer-; æt-, æfter-, bi-, bī-, eall-, forþ-, ful-, ġeond-, inn-, mid-, niþer-, ofer-, under-, ūp-, ūt-, wiþ-, ymb-.
